The Dirty Diamonds

Découverte, Musique Par: Beats™ No Comments »

My good buddy, Mike Perry (aka Black Holes), and his band, The Dirty Diamonds, are just about ready to drop their debut album, Monster Ballads. In case you’re unfamiliar with The Dirty Diamonds, they’re a very solid band out of Chicago with a penchant for balancing pop, soul and doo-wop. Their new album will most likely be the soundtrack for many-a-folks’ Summertime cookouts this season, because good pop music (such as theirs) and warm weather were basically made for each other. As a whole, the best part about the album is the continuity. Not only do they do a great job of maintaining a rich soul experience, but the final mixdown smoothly transitions each song into the next, which means you could keep that puppy on repeat all day long.

Get a taste of these good vibrations with their featured track, “The Right Direction”, and mark April 13th on your calendars because UR Chicago will be giving away the Diamonds’ new album for free. If you can’t wait until the 13th, gear up for the album release party (Saturday, April 10th) with Flosstradamus and free beer, details below.

Sky Blue Diamonds

Fresh off his URB Next 100 listing, JDP is back with some more fire. Aptly dubbed “Sky Blue Diamonds”, it’s easily the freshest thing to come out of the Chicago Hip-Hop scene in a long ass time. As per usual, JDP’s rhymes are cleverly on-point and refreshingly concise in contrast to the large number of mainstream rappers who spout off about all the same old, irrelevant shit. Along with the stellar lyricism, the production is also something to take note of.

The production mirrors the same quality of that in the Top 40 charts. At first listen, the subtle background synths reminded me of those in T-Pain’s self-produced track, “Buy U A Drank”, while the overall feel was more along the lines of T.I.’s “What You Know”, which was produced by DJ Toomp. Two mainstream classics, need I say more? No. Check it out for yourself and keep an eye out for -Purple-, the follow-up to his Air Raid mixtape.

Division & Ashland

I got another exclusive from the disco/ funk/ house duo known as Le Principle. This one is, apparently, inspired by the Division & Ashland intersection here in Chicago, as it’s aptly named “Division & Ashland.” Whether it’s referring to said cross-streets or not, this is definitely the funkiest thing I’ve heard from these guys and it’s a direction I hope they continue to travel.

If you’re unfamiliar with Le Principle, not to worry, as they’ve got some nice things lined up with Solid Bump Records (San Fran disco house outfit) that should dazzle you as the year goes on.

More Concepts

Even while I am in Montreal, literally chilling (it’s 10º F), a bit of my heart still lies in Chicago, especially when I hear my friend’s music. A prime example is Michael Miles’ band; Love Concept. Featured a while back here on Hot Bizzies, Love Concept has returned with two brand new tracks. Both with that same feeling as before, the worn out but well loved 80’s throw back disco sound. These dudes are doing what Toro y Moi, Small Black, Neon Indian, and Washed Out doing but way before and way better. These tunes just feel so good. Sit back and soak it in.

Tell My Love

Découverte, Musique Par: Beats™ No Comments »

If you’re in New York this weekend then you’re in for a treat. VDRK and OCD Automatic, alongside Preston Craig and Free Magic, are throwing a little release party at Santos for their new track “Tell My Love”. I can safely say that this is one of my favorite tracks from the past couple months and I would have put it in my top 10 tracks of 2009 but, sadly, it wasn’t officially released yet.

I know it might be a little early to dub this a “top 10 prospect” for this year, but who knows. I do. And it is. You’ll love it. See you in New York (not really). Cheers!

Saturday, January 16 @ Santos Basement:

Valhalla

Bass bad boy Hostage is back with a brand new EP called Valhalla on our favorite rave music label, Nightshifters. The release packed with 4 original tracks that touch base on tribal, dubstep, dutch… Everything! He’s basically taken each track and packed it with the party starting essentials. Not only are the original tracks fantastic but like any good modern release, there are also some fantastic remixes too!

With a heavy line-up of artists like Chrissy Murderbot, Rampage, Angel Alanis and the only non-Chicagoan on the remix duties, Momma’s Boy, this release is a must have! Head over to Beatport and spend those paychecks.

Basement Jaxx + MSTRKFT + Modeselektor Giveaway – CLOSED

Découverte, Musique Par: Beats™ No Comments »

Aside from the massively huge Halloween show with Chromeo, Crystal Castles and Boys Noize, I think this Basement Jaxx tour stop is going to be one of the biggest shows on the year for Chicago. With supporting acts like MSTRKRFT, Modeselektor, Bald E, Moneypenny and Jordan Z you can’t really go wrong. Also, in case you didn’t know why Jaxx were hitting the tour life again, it’s because they’re promoting their newly released, highly anticipated Scars album. Scars is their newest release since Crazy Itch Radio, which came out in 2006, and features support from the likes of Kelis, Santigold, Yo Majesty, Yoko Ono and many more.

Per usual, to enter this fine contest, email us to enter. In doing so, you’ll be in the running for a pair of tickets to the show and all of your wildest dreams will come true. Seriously. All of them.

Friday, November 6 @ Congress Theatre:
Basement Jaxx (DJ Set)
