Sky Blue Diamonds

Fresh off his URB Next 100 listing, JDP is back with some more fire. Aptly dubbed “Sky Blue Diamonds”, it’s easily the freshest thing to come out of the Chicago Hip-Hop scene in a long ass time. As per usual, JDP’s rhymes are cleverly on-point and refreshingly concise in contrast to the large number of mainstream rappers who spout off about all the same old, irrelevant shit. Along with the stellar lyricism, the production is also something to take note of.

The production mirrors the same quality of that in the Top 40 charts. At first listen, the subtle background synths reminded me of those in T-Pain’s self-produced track, “Buy U A Drank”, while the overall feel was more along the lines of T.I.’s “What You Know”, which was produced by DJ Toomp. Two mainstream classics, need I say more? No. Check it out for yourself and keep an eye out for -Purple-, the follow-up to his Air Raid mixtape.

Funky, Orange Tiger

T.T. Harkin hooked it up with some very smooth flowing, progressive-like dance tunes. “Orange Pears” and “Crouching Tiger”, both original mixes, feel like the kind of tracks that you want to just play out forever. In fact, I did have them on repeat for some time; no big deal. And while his original mixes might be progressively interesting, he shakes things up with his highly-syncopated remix of “Get Funky” by Pirupa. Nice versatility, Harkin.

Prins Thomas (aka Thomas Moen Hermansen) delivered hard on this “Uggebugg” track, aka the first hint of what his forthcoming, solo (under Prins) album has in store. Soak in this organic goodness.

The Worst It Gets

Penguin Prison is doing it right. Solid art, solid remixes, solid everything! To help push the release of the “The Worse It Gets” “7 vinyl, Neon Gold has commissioned remixes by the two lovelies known as RAC and Starsmith. Both of which deliver the kind of disco-pop that feels good around this time of year in the Middle West and I recommend you give them a listen. Thumbs up.

It’s Gettin’ Hot In Here

(Hot City – Setting Me Free)

Remember when you were little you’d mix different sodas from the fountain together? Most times your mix would be completely undrinkable and sometimes it would be the best concoction ever. When producing dance music, you can have the same 2 outcomes and, with a dash of Chicago House, UK Bass and Rave, Hot City is mixing tunes just right. With piano chords and choppy vocal spurts, their tunes are just straight up ILL and send kids into a frenzy at parties.

Dan Black – Symphonies (Hot City Remix)
Hot City – If That’s How I Feel
Monarchy – The Phoenix Alive (Hot City Mix)

Talk To Me

Découverte, Musique Par: Jakob No Comments »

In Busy P.’s words: “A few weeks ago, we were touring Australia for Parklife. Tiga was closing our stage every night, in front of 10,000 kids ready to rumble with him, to get wrestled to the ground. And, as usual, he throws out his secret weapon, Talk To Me. The crowd explodes. That’s when I ran onstage screaming, “T-Dawg, what’s that sound????” - The only reply I got was a big, creepy grin… Merci!

One late night, on the narrow streets of Melbourne, Tiga and I went out for a little boogie with the Bang Gang squad. Our Aussie friends know how to look after us. We spent the night at Sorry Grandma!, the hottest club in town, drinking Rave Juice and trying to understand drunk Aussies’ sub-English accents.
I knew it was the perfect time to ask Tiga about that insane track he was playing. Ask a drunk man something and you’ll get everything you need. Everything.

HEY TODAY, he said.” – Thank you, Turbo!

Division & Ashland

I got another exclusive from the disco/ funk/ house duo known as Le Principle. This one is, apparently, inspired by the Division & Ashland intersection here in Chicago, as it’s aptly named “Division & Ashland.” Whether it’s referring to said cross-streets or not, this is definitely the funkiest thing I’ve heard from these guys and it’s a direction I hope they continue to travel.

If you’re unfamiliar with Le Principle, not to worry, as they’ve got some nice things lined up with Solid Bump Records (San Fran disco house outfit) that should dazzle you as the year goes on.

Fear of Tigers

Monsieur Adi has proven once again that he is not only the master of piano intros but also a maestro of synth string orchestras, smooth basslines and mind-blowing, amazingly beautiful music in general. I don’t even want to lose any more words on this, just close your eyes and enjoy.

Sometimes

I haven’t decided yet whether this is a good day or the worst one in weeks, but this shiny little gem in my inbox has certainly given the whole day a strong tendency towards positive. There’s not a lot to say about Sydney-based artist(s) Universe as they shrouded their identity in secrecy, but I’m eternally glad they sent over their take on Miami Horror’s Sometimes. Just put on your Wayfarer shades and take a ride in the evening sun, pretending to sit in a 1959 Cadillac, cruising on a Florida coastal street.

The Electro Wars

The Young Punx

Découverte, Musique Par: Jakob No Comments »

“Probably the first album in history to have toyed with drum and bass, heavy metal, electropop and cuban timba – within the first 5 minutes.” The official press text says it all – and does not promise too much: UK-based electro outfit The Young Punx are once again shredding genre boundaries with their second studio album, Mashpop and Punkstep. I had the pleasure of exclusively pre-listening the whole album – as well as some remixes by names such as Shinichi Osawa, Riva Starr and Acid Kids, which I’m free to share with you in full 320kbps quality. While Shinichi Osawa’s take on the Punx is quite disappointing, Riva Starr does not fail to impress with a massive rework of Juice & Gin.
